The ecology of arthropod vectors has been severely disturbed by global climate change. Cases of vector-borne tropical diseases increase significantly in recent years. Taiwan lays across tropical and subtropical region. The warm and humid environment provides ideal habitats for various disease vectors, such as mosquitoes, flies, fleas, ticks, lice, and cockroaches. The vectors not only transmit human diseases but also threaten livestock breeding and farming. This course will provide a complete introduction to vector biology, the etiological agents of diseases, the routes of transmission, disease presentations, and global trends, etc. Students will gain knowledge about the general situation of vector-borne diseases in the world via the required text, supplementary readings and resources, and lectures. Besides, special lectures will be given by invited scholars. Selected journal articles in designated fields and classroom discussions will be arranged to strengthen students' understanding of the development of important emerging infectious diseases.

The goal of this course is to enable students to understand the research and development of vector-borne infectious diseases, and to keep abreast of the latest research progress and trends of vector-borne infectious diseases. During the learning process, students are expected to discover their own places and reflect the mission and responsibility of an epidemiologist in outbreaks of infectious diseases.
At the end of the course the students are expected to
1. Explain effects of environmental factors on a population’s health (D17-7)
2. Explain biological and genetic factors that affect a population’s health (D17-8)
3. Explain an ecological perspective on the connections among human health, animal health and ecosystem health (e.g. One Health) (D17-12)
This course is an advanced course and will use journal articles as the primary teaching material. Students are required to participate in the class, give an oral presentation, and submit a final term paper.
